Been meaning to ask this. Poverty rate is 4.8%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up.

I'm a software engineer and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is challenging and there's always something going on.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Sunset) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've been living here for 3 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The nightlife is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..
