OK so I'm single, late 30s, and Rent is about $776/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $159,500 on average. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 4 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into running, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in East for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals
- The school system scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited high-paying job options
