Couple moving to Topeka from out of state

Hey folks, I'm a 50-year-old real estate agent and The median home value here is around $130,600, which is actually reasonable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. Am I wrong here? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I've lived in East for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Strong job market in several industries
- The public transit scene is solid

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
- The traffic scene is decent

The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Chicago it's average.

I've lived in Old Town for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The healthcare scene is improving

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Phoenix about 13 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is decent.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 50, moved here 4 years ago from New York. I've lived in The Heights and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The walkability situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Midtown for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Active local events and festivals
- The traffic scene is average

The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Good luck with whatever you decide..
