Should I move to Torrance or stay in Chicago?

Hi all, My family moved here when I was a kid. The median home value here is around $1,036,600, which is pretty steep. The unemployment rate is 3.5%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Am I overthinking this? The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Midtown for 10 years. Moved from Seattle for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
legal is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is improving - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Midtown schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Far from beaches/mountains. And community vibe can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Midtown for 11 years. Moved from Atlanta for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2022 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
government is strong here. real estate is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Midtown schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Homeless population growing downtown. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 8/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely hit or miss and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Highland) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 7 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into running, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Riverside) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Hope this helps!.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely solid and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (East) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
