OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Oak Park. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in education. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 13 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Baltimore it's hit or miss.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 1 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is decent.

I've been here 3 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in West. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in construction. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Sunset for 4 years. Moved from Houston for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
education is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is excellent - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Chain restaurants dominate. And cost of living can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 6/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
