Why I chose Troy over bigger cities

Hello, Born and raised here. Poverty rate is 8.4%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 1.7%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Eastside area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are stable. You get used to it after the first year.
