Honest thoughts on life in Troy

Random thought, I work in government and Rent is about $934/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $70,450 in Troy. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Has anyone dealt with this? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Uptown. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in consulting. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Charlotte about 15 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Definitely worth checking out..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to San Diego it's underrated.

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much pricey but now it's challenging.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 3 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..
