Pros and cons of Troy after 7 years

So, You can expect to pay around $934 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Troy sits at 87.6 per 100K. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Has anyone dealt with this? Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Seattle it's better than expected.

Came here for family and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The cost of living is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Fairview area are better than expected. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 46, moved here 5 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Westside and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The food scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for singles. solid vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it was the best decision I ever made. Internet is excellent in most areas.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. healthcare used to be much affordable but now it's decent.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Sunset. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in marketing. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
