Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Austin about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is underrated.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in The Heights for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- The weather scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in East area are improving. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely improving and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Uptown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 14 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a project manager, 48, moved here 1 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in South and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Friendly community, easy to meet people
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The public transit situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for couples. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
