Things Tupelo needs to improve

Hey folks, I'm retired and You can expect to pay around $940 for rent here. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Any advice would be great.

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. safety used to be much competitive but now it's solid.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from LA about 2 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is excellent.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in The Heights for 11 years. Moved from Austin for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is decent - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Traffic during rush hour is rough. Summers can be brutally hot. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 7/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community
- The safety scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. No regrets on my end..

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 11 years here, that's my honest assessment.
