Rent in Turlock getting crazy

Hey folks, The median home value here is around $443,900, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $443,900 on average. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Would love some local perspective.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely average and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Highland) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Oak Park for 5 years. Moved from Boston for my partner's job. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is tough - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Far from beaches/mountains. And pet-friendliness can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 7/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 9 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I genuinely enjoy living here. No regrets on my end..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much reasonable but now it's underrated.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Four distinct seasons
- The pet-friendliness scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for young professionals. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 14 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 15 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is hit or miss.

Bought a house here in 2021 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Came here for family and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The safety is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
