I relocated for work and Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $279,400 on average. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What do you all think? TIA! Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely average and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Riverside) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Greenfield. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in tech. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much growing but now it's pretty good.

I'm a software engineer and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is surprisingly good and there's always something going on.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Bought a house here in 2024 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Denver about 13 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 15 years here, that's my honest assessment.
