Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely average and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Fairview) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

The food scene here is pretty good. Tons of great craft beer places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 25, moved here 1 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in The Heights and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Sunset: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $60K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The cultural scene is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I've lived in South for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options
- The school system scene is average

The downsides:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've been living here for 10 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The walkability is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..
