I've lived in Sunset for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong job market in several industries
- The outdoor recreation scene is solid
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Chicago about 5 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Old Town. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in tech. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Thai.

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in Downtown area are solid. Kids love it here.

I've been here 4 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..
