Housing market in Utica right now

Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and You can expect to pay around $907 for rent here. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Cedar Grove. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in marketing. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 52, moved here 3 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Pine Hills and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The healthcare situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for singles. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..
