Random thought, I work in legal and Household incomes average around $51,513 in Utica. Median household income is $51,513, which feels on the lower side for the area. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Any advice would be great. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to.

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely decent and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (West) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 15 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Pine Hills. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in tech. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely challenging and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Highland) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Old Town. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in real estate. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Hope this helps!.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want pet-friendliness, then yeah this place is great. But if community vibe matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
