So, Born and raised here. Poverty rate is 22.9%, which is higher than I expected. Homes are going for about $133,400 on average. Rent is about $907/month for a decent place. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.
Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events
Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
- Boring for young people
- Mosquitoes and humidity
People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Highland area are better than expected. Kids love it here.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Chicago about 8 years ago. The main reasons were school and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is decent.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 36, moved here 12 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in North and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The job market situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to LA it's solid.
