Longtime lurker here, Been living here since 2014. Rent is about $1,013/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $131,600 on average. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Let me know your thoughts. Appreciate any input. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a marketing manager, 39, moved here 15 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The cost of living situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Raleigh it's pretty good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Raleigh about 9 years ago. The main reasons were family and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is decent.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Definitely worth checking out..
