Van Alstyne quality of life -am I missing something?
We have two kids and It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Has anyone dealt with this?

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely challenging and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Old Town) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the Riverside side, now on the Westside side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
