Living in Vancouver — the reality

My family moved here when I was a kid. The median home value here is around $440,300, which is pretty steep. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Portland about 1 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are developing, gas is excellent.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Came here for family and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The pet-friendliness is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Used to live on the Midtown side, now on the North side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 14 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Minneapolis about 15 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely pretty good and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2021 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

We moved here with our family and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Schools in South area are decent. Kids love it here.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.
