Affordable areas near Vandalia?

Hey everyone, We have two kids and Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. You can expect to pay around $738 for rent here. Rent is about $738/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $88,800, which is actually reasonable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. What do you all think? The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely tough and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (The Heights) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
