Raising a family in Vashon -thoughts?

So, Poverty rate is 4.8%, which is pretty low. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Am I overthinking this? The food scene here is surprisingly good. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cost of living, then yeah this place is great. But if outdoor recreation matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 29, moved here 8 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in South and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The walkability situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for singles. tough vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Phoenix it's better than expected.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Seattle about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Feel free to reach out with questions..
