First post here. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and It's a a smaller city city with about 26,772 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Vernon Hills sits at 67.1 per 100K. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Portland about 13 years ago. The main reasons were school and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good internet infrastructure
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are affordable, gas is decent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Good luck with whatever you decide..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.
