Pros and cons of Victoria after 7 years

Hello, We're a young couple and Rent is about $2,435/month for a decent place. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Let me know your thoughts. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 34, moved here 7 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Fairview and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The cultural scene situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for remote workers. tough vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Definitely worth checking out..

The food scene here is pretty good. Tons of great Mediterranean places. I love the pace of life here.
