Is Villa Park getting better or worse?

Hey folks, The median home value here is around $313,100, which seems about average. You can expect to pay around $1,398 for rent here. It's a a small town city with about 22,456 people. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Active local events

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Cold winters
- Limited nightlife
- High property taxes
- Homelessness issues downtown
What do you all think? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 40, moved here 7 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Riverside and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Can feel isolated
3. The weather situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for families. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The food scene is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 9 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and the quality of life is solid. Schools in Fairview area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it was the best decision I ever made. Internet is excellent in most areas.
