Been meaning to ask this. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 7 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Boston about 14 years ago. The main reasons were family and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is underrated.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Hope this helps!.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 29, moved here 15 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in West and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The dating scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$90K here.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
