Been meaning to ask this. I'm a 35-year-old software engineer and The median home value here is around $235,600, which is actually reasonable. Poverty rate is 4.2%, which is pretty low. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. What would you do? Cheers. The weather takes some getting used to. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Greenfield. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of new development happening
- The pet-friendliness scene is improving
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 9 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
