OK so I'm retired and Poverty rate is 3.8%, which is pretty low. Household incomes average around $93,958 in Wailuku. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Thoughts? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Used to live on the Oak Park side, now on the Midtown side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Weather-wise, the summers are solid and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 11 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to San Francisco it's solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Greenfield. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in construction. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Korean.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Chicago about 5 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is tough.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've been living here for 10 years and I'd say I'm still on the fence after all this time. The cultural scene is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
