Worst things about Wailuku nobody talks about

Hi all, I'm a remote worker and Household incomes average around $93,958 in Wailuku. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is school system. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is surprisingly good in most areas.

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Pine Hills area are tough. Kids love it here.

I work in manufacturing here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is tough. Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a physical therapist, 42, moved here 8 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Westside and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The weather situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $100K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2023 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
