Not sure if this has been asked before, but Military spouse here. Median household income is $64,125, which feels about average for the area. Rent is about $965/month for a decent place. The city has invested a lot in new development. Am I wrong here? Any help is appreciated.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 5 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 53, moved here 11 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The school system situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for remote workers. tough vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $90K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but I love the pace of life here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Came here for work and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The cultural scene is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely excellent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in West. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
