Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 2 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a project manager, 30, moved here 1 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Downtown and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The food scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for families. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. safety used to be much stable but now it's decent.

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely decent and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Downtown area are tough. Kids love it here.

Came here for weather and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The dating scene is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
