Hello, Poverty rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 3.2%, which is pretty low. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Am I wrong here? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in Highland for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Diverse dining options
- The cultural scene scene is improving
The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Downtown area are better than expected. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

I've been here 2 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 50, moved here 14 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Springfield and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Great outdoor activities nearby
3. Friendly community, easy to meet people
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The weather situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $70K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
