Unpopular Washington opinions - go

Hey everyone,

I grew up here, left for college, and came back 7 years ago. Traffic has gotten noticeably worse in the past year.

A friend just bought in Capitol Hill for K and I'm not sure if that was smart. With a population of 672,079, the city has a {city_feel}.

What I like:
- Friendly locals
- Four seasons
- Active community events

What I don't:
- Limited public transit
- Winters are harsh
- Tourist crowds

Grocery prices are creeping up but still manageable. The retail scene here is really picking up.

Honestly it depends on what you prioritize. If career growth matters most, then yeah Washington is great. But if you need walkability, might want to look at Logan Circle instead.

I'll give you a thorough answer since I've been through this exact situation.

I moved to Columbia Heights from Detroit about 1 years ago. Initially everything felt unfamiliar. But after settling in, The food scene in {hood} is honestly incredible..

A few things I'd recommend:
- Check out Columbia Heights and Cleveland Park for housing
- Give it at least 6 months before deciding if it's for you
- Visit during different seasons if you can

The biggest adjustment was job market. Traffic has gotten noticeably worse in the past year.. Overall I'd give Washington a 8/10 for young professionals.

Let me give you the perspective nobody asked for but everyone needs.

I've lived in Columbia Heights, Dupont Circle, and currently in H Street Corridor. Each one feels like a different city honestly.

Rent comparison:
- Columbia Heights: /mo for a 3-bed
- Dupont Circle: about /mo
- H Street Corridor: /mo but excellent

The food scene in {hood} is honestly incredible.. The key is finding your neighborhood. Once you do, Washington really clicks. Hope that helps!

H Street Corridor local here. Nightlife is decent if you know where to go.. If you need specific recommendations feel free to ask.

We pay /mo in Woodley Park for a 1-bed and honestly it's worth it. Traffic has gotten noticeably worse in the past year.

Gonna share a detailed perspective since most replies are pretty surface-level.

I'm a remote worker in Shaw. Been here since 2017. Grocery prices are creeping up but still manageable..

Neighborhood-wise, Shaw has really evolved in the past few years. Navy Yard is the up-and-coming spot right now. Cleveland Park is where I'd look if budget is a concern.

Job market for tech: solid. For tech: pricey.

The parks system here is underrated.

OK since this keeps coming up, here's my definitive Washington guide from someone who's been here way too long.

**Neighborhoods ranked (my opinion):**

Tier 1 (if you can afford it):
- Navy Yard: walkable, great restaurants, young crowd
- Columbia Heights: affordable with character

Tier 2 (best value):
- Georgetown: hidden gem, locals only know
- Petworth: suburban feel, big yards

Avoid (unless you know what you're doing):
- I won't name names but do your research on anything significantly below market rate

**Cost Reality Check:**
- 1-bed decent area: /mo
- 2-bed decent area: /mo
- Groceries for 2: /mo
- Car insurance: improving compared to national avg
- Utilities: /mo average

**The Honest Truth:**
I don't understand why more people don't talk about {hood}.. Washington is lively but it's not for everyone. If you value quiet over diversity, you'll love it. If it's the other way around, maybe consider Cleveland.

Great question. Here's my honest take after 6 years:

The good:
- Friendly locals
- Good parks and trails
- Safe neighborhoods

The not-so-good:
- Nightlife is lacking
- Property taxes

The airport connections are {adj} which matters if you travel.. I'd say for students, Washington is solid. Good luck!
