What to expect moving to Washington?

Anyone else feel this way? With a population of 672K, Washington is a major city. Household incomes average around $106,287 in Washington. The unemployment rate is 4.6%, which is about average. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Anyone in a similar situation? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Old Town. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Fairview) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
