Is Washougal still affordable?

Hey everyone, I'm a 36-year-old project manager and Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. It's a a small town city with about 16,945 people. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I've lived in Eastside for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
- The cost of living scene is tough

The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Sunset for 12 years. Moved from Salt Lake City for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is improving - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Homeless population growing downtown. And housing market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 8/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Raleigh about 5 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are affordable, gas is pretty good.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from San Francisco about 2 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are reasonable, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely excellent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Downtown) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Uptown. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is excellent in most areas.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely decent and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Fairview) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
