Moving to Watsonville with kids -good idea?

First post here. We have two kids and Crime rate is something to consider -Watsonville sits at 604.5 per 100K. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 14 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is challenging in most areas.

Came here for school and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The public transit is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Austin about 4 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Good internet infrastructure
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
