Waukegan vs San Francisco -which is better?

Longtime lurker here, Median household income is $70,578, which feels about average for the area. With a population of 88,919, Waukegan is a smaller city. You can expect to pay around $1,163 for rent here. Poverty rate is 10.9%, which is around average. Homes are going for about $177,600 on average. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Friendly people
- Close to nature
- Diverse community
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Cold winters
- Boring for young people
- Limited cultural events
What are your go-to spots? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 8 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 27, moved here 1 years ago from Miami. I've lived in The Heights and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Friendly community, easy to meet people
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The food scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for remote workers. solid vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
