Hey folks, Military spouse here. It's a a small town city with about 1,209 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Wauregan sits at 307.3 per 100K. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What neighborhoods would you suggest? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. **Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Riverside schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Property taxes are high. And school system can be frustrating.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Tampa about 15 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Nightlife is limited
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is average.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
