Curious what people think. I work in construction and Rent is about $1,358/month for a decent place. Median household income is $70,333, which feels about average for the area. It's a a small town city with about 15,401 people. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.
Pros:
- Great weather
- Growing food scene
- Close to nature
- Walkable downtown
Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Sprawl everywhere
- Poor road conditions
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Not enough green space
It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's been a really good experience overall. Internet is decent in most areas.

I'm a physical therapist and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. The community is better than expected and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much reasonable but now it's average.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Riverside. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in retail. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 4 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a project manager, 48, moved here 1 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Oak Park and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The traffic situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for couples. improving vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Lakewood area are excellent. Kids love it here.

Came here for work and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The weather is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Worth doing your research before committing.

Used to live on the Uptown side, now on the Old Town side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.
