OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in tech. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Indian.
No regrets on my end..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is community vibe. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've been here 7 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Came here for work and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor recreation is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is cultural scene. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in The Heights for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The nightlife scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Atlanta about 7 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are growing, gas is average.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Good luck with whatever you decide..
