Living in Wendell -the reality

Alright, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Crime rate is something to consider -Wendell sits at 74.1 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 0.8%, which is pretty low. With a population of 11,585, Wendell is a small town. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Low taxes
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong sense of community
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Sprawl everywhere
- Boring for young people
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Homelessness issues downtown
Thoughts? Thanks in advance! There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is walkability. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Phoenix about 6 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is decent.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Raleigh about 13 years ago. The main reasons were school and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 11 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Active local events and festivals
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Urban sprawl is real

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.
