Biggest downsides of living in Weslaco?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $119,200 on average. Average temperature is around 75--F, so it's warm year-round. Crime rate is something to consider -Weslaco sits at 371.4 per 100K. Rent is about $942/month for a decent place. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is nightlife. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been living here for 2 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community vibe is underrated compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Raleigh it's improving.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Came here for retirement and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The traffic is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in East for 8 years. Moved from Seattle for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it was the best decision I ever made. The outdoor scene is decent - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. East schools are hit or miss. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Limited entertainment options. And healthcare can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 8/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
