Longtime lurker here, Property taxes are high but you get good services. Should I be concerned?

As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much developing but now it's hit or miss.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. safety used to be much growing but now it's hit or miss.

Used to live on the Pine Hills side, now on the Greenfield side. Completely different vibe. it's been a really good experience overall.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it was the best decision I ever made. Internet is average in most areas.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Dallas about 10 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 57, moved here 12 years ago from LA. I've lived in Oak Park and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The nightlife situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for families. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Miami about 9 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is solid.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
