Remote worker thinking about West Chicago

Alright, My family moved here when I was a kid. It's a a smaller city city with about 25,434 people. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Is this normal for West Chicago? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Moved here from San Francisco about 5 years ago. it was the best decision I ever made. Still getting used to nightlife but Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've lived in Old Town for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Diverse dining options
- The food scene scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 5 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been in The Heights for 4 years. Moved from Nashville for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. government is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it was the best decision I ever made. The outdoor scene is tough - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Chain restaurants dominate. And job market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 56, moved here 7 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The job market situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for families. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.
