I'm single, late 40s, and With a population of 25,434, West Chicago is a smaller city. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Thoughts? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development.

As someone who grew up here, it's not perfect but it works for me. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much pricey but now it's tough.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a real estate agent and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is solid and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
