I'm single, late 30s, and It's a a small town city with about 17,723 people. Household incomes average around $54,152 in West Columbia. Median household income is $54,152, which feels on the lower side for the area. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Should I be concerned? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely underrated and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Westside) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 6 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been here 11 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is hit or miss.

Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Minneapolis about 10 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Miami about 11 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is solid.

Used to live on the Springfield side, now on the Riverside side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The weather is solid compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

I work in retail here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is average. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
