Life in West Des Moines as a young professional

Hello, Been living here since 2012. It's a a smaller city city with about 69,893 people. Rent is about $1,194/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 1.8%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $84,925, which feels pretty solid for the area. With a population of 69,893, West Des Moines is a smaller city. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Boring for young people
- Far from major airports
- Limited cultural events
What do you all think? The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want public transit, then yeah this place is great. But if safety matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 38, moved here 7 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in East and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The food scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for retirees. improving vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $90K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely better than expected and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Uptown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in West. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in engineering. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

No regrets on my end..
