Curious what people think. Homes are going for about $145,400 on average. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Worth the trade-offs? Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Boston about 8 years ago. The main reasons were weather and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Nightlife is limited
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely challenging and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Downtown) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been living here for 4 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The nightlife is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Hope this helps!.
