Why I chose West Hartford over bigger cities

OK so With a population of 63,809, West Hartford is a smaller city. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Thoughts? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from New York about 5 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are reasonable, gas is average.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 2 years. Moved from San Diego for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is pretty good. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is solid - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Road conditions need improvement. And food scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 5/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I'm a physical therapist and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community is underrated and there's always something going on.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 51, moved here 9 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Midtown and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for young professionals. average vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
