Is public transit usable in West Haven?

I grew up here but left for a while. Poverty rate is 8.5%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $1,389/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $265,200 on average. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Does this match your experience? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is weather. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Boston about 8 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Decent public transit for the size
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is excellent.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 44, moved here 2 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Eastside and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Limited shopping options
3. The public transit situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
